Mozilla Firefox born during the browser wars that started back in 1997, following the releasing of Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.0. As a result, in 1998, Netscape Navigator's source code was publicly released under GPL, and after that, the Mozilla project started.

Netscape's source code was rewritten completely, and the first success was the launch of the public development version in 1999. A few years later, in June 2002, 1st version the Mozilla Web browser was launched. It was a combination of web browser and e-mail client. This led to the start of an open source project aimed at spliting the browser from the other embedded applications and a project was called Mozilla Browser.
It was ready in September 2002, and the first public version (0.1) was released under the name Phoenix. Because of brand name conflicts: with an open source database Firebird and with BIOS, starting with version 0.8 the project was renamed to Mozilla Firefox. Mozilla Firefox quickly became known as a secure, fast, customizable and user-friendly web browser.
